Kenyan ISP goes mobile WiMAX with Alvarion

WiMAX Vision

AccessKenya Group, a corporate ISP with over 2,200 clients in Kenya, has chosen Alvarion's 802.16e BreezeMAX solution for large-scale WiMAX deployment in the 3.3GHz frequency band.

The Kenyan ISP says it will use the WiMAX network to not only provide business customers with VPNs and better quality of service and customer support, but also to make a push into the residential broadband market for the first time

"After six months of extensive trials, we chose Alvarion as our preferred WiMAX vendor and are excited to begin rolling out the network to provide reliable and fast residential broadband service in Kenya," said Jonathan Somen, managing director of AccessKenya Group.

"AccessKenya Group presents an exciting and promising expansion strategy and we are pleased to play an important role in their aggressive go-to-market plan," added Tzvika Friedman, president and CEO of Alvarion. "We value our partnership with one of Kenya's most innovative operators and leading corporate ISP, and our presence and ongoing commitment to the emerging markets is reinforced once again by this project."

AccessKenya Group is not the only WiMAX contract win that Alvarion has in Kenya. Kenya Data Networks (KDN) is also using the Israeli firm's BreezeMAX equipment for nationwide rollout.

Established in January 2003, KDN holds a Public Data Network operator licence and is majority-owned by the Sameer Group, a large economic entity in Kenya.
